Super Simple Geography
This idea came from a video I watched on teaching Geography using the Charlotte Mason method, and it's so simple it almost feels like it's not enough. But let me tell ya, it works! I used this method with my kids while teaching them the 50 states. They learned them all quickly, without even realizing that they were memorizing the map.
I gave my kids a blank map that I printed from d-maps.com (this site also has some great printables: Seterra). I had them fill in one state from memory (it's best to do the state you live in first), then I asked them if they knew any other states from memory and they would fill those in. When they had labeled all that they could remember, I gave them a map that already had the states labeled and had them choose two more to label on their blank maps.
We did this 3-4 times each week. You can do this with any map! Super simple.
Free Geography Games
Games are a GREAT way to learn geography. Here are a few places to find free geography games.
Seterra has loads of quiz type games for everything from rivers and capitals to continents and countries. They even have historical maps for wars and flag quizzes!
This site has LOTS of free online geography learning games.
There are some rather advanced games on this site. It would be great for higher grades.
World Geography Games
World Geography Games brings entertaining, educational quiz games for kids, students, adults, and seniors to test and improve your geographical knowledge. Our internet quizzes include questions about all the countries in the world that will challenge your brain.
Free Video Learning
I think the host talks a little too fast, but he does manage to pack a TON of information into very short videos. Used together with some notebooking pages (like these from Notebooking Fairy) these would make quick and easy geography lessons. He is going through every country in the world alphabetically. So far he has 151 videos created!
