I love music. It is good for the soul and has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My kids share that love, so when I was given a three-month Musik at Home Membership I was excited to see all that was offered.

What is Musik at Home?

Musik at Home is an online streaming service that teaches music appreciation in a variety of engaging ways. Children birth to age seven will enjoy learning all of these wonderful topics:

  • Songs for special days
  • Singing games
  • Call and respond
  • Musical instruments
  • Graphic notation
  • Dance with and without scarves
  • Rhythm sticks and other sound makers

The more than 400 available activities are categorized into a few main categories.

  • Babies & Toddlers
  • Preschoolers
  • Pre-K to 1st Grade
  • Family Style Mixed Ages (ages 1-5)

The categories are arranged in a way that makes going through all of the topics very organized and sequential, but there is also a search option and easy navigation if you prefer to go your own way!

Videos can be accessed 24/7 with an internet connection and supported device.

  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • FireTV
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Android device
  • Computer browser

Who Teaches the Lessons?

The teacher for Musik at Home is Kathryn Brunner, an early childhood music educator, certified Musikgarten teacher, and current homeschool mom. Her teaching style is very upbeat and energetic, which holds children's attention well. She has a friendly smile and a beautiful singing voice. She appears to be very knowledgeable in the videos. She doesn't use notes or have long pauses, even with the distraction of small children in the videos with her.

Do I Need to Buy Anything Else?

Your subscription, which you can pay monthly or annually, gives you unlimited access to all of the music lessons and activities in all categories. You will need some very basic supplies such as scarves (paper napkins work as well), rhythm sticks (pencils, or even sticks from outside), and shakers (make your own with rice and a paper towel tube).

There is a shop with lots of supplemental and extra goodies that you can purchase if you'd like, but they are not necessary for the lessons. You'll find things like posters, CDs of the songs, a song lyric booklet, posters, and more.

Our Experience

I was so excited about this service and felt that my son would really enjoy it, even though he is a little older than the recommended age (he's 9). He loves music and theatre so I thought it was a great fit for him. Unfortunately, he felt it was too babyish and wasn't interested in taking part at all. We tried several different activities from the mixed ages group as well as the instruments and dance categories, but he just wasn't interested. I'm terribly bummed about it.

Because of our experience, I feel that the activities are true to the age recommendations. I wouldn't wander too far above the maximum age (7), particularly with boys.
